Tech Check + Happy New Year
Mary:
Oh — I think we might actually be in business. Do you see it? It’s still up there?
Julie:
It’s pumping. Things are happening.
Mary:
Things are happening! You mean… things might actually be right? I think we might be in business. Here we go. Yay! Yay! We did it.
Girlfriend — I don’t know how that happens, honestly. I don’t know how we’re actually… is this real?
Hello everybody. Oh my god. It worked.
Happy New Year. Happy New Year, technology.
Julie:
Happy New Year.
Mary:
Happy New Year, everyone. It took me a while to get it together… she’s stressed out. (laughs)
So I was like, “Oh my God, oh my Lord.” All right — here we are, Jules. Welcome. Happy New Year.
Julie:
Hi. Happy New Year. It’s been a minute.
Mary:
It’s been a minute. Yeah. Yeah. But we’re here, we’re here. It’s been an interesting year. I think we can all agree.
Julie:
Yeah. That was an interesting year that we can leave over there. See you later.
Mary:
I love that idea — that we can just leave it over there. I really love that idea: “See ya.”
Because I don’t… listen, I know there are blessings. I’m grateful. I don’t want to seem like I’m not grateful. But this year challenged me in a lot of ways — I’ll speak for myself — and I’m glad it’s behind me.
Take the lessons, leave behind the crap. How about that?
Julie:
Same. Agreed.
Numerology: Closing a Year, Starting a Year
Mary:
We were talking before this about the numerology of the year — does that count as a nine year? Like a nine year, a challenge-y kind of year?
Julie:
Yeah. In numerology, if you add up the digits of the year — we have the 2, the 0, the 2, the 5 — that adds up to nine. And nine is usually a number of closure and endings.
So for a lot of us it was putting some things behind us, which can be hard. I know folks who were laid off. I know people whose relationships changed. There was a lot of change. Small ones, big ones — whatever they were.
Mary:
Yeah.
Julie:
But now we have a year of growth. If you add up the digits for this year, you reduce it down to a one. New beginnings, new starts, things coming to the forefront.
Mary:
Let’s go, one year.
Julie:
Exactly. We went through last year, learned a lot. This year we can rebuild — or build. Or both.
Mary:
All of the above.
New Year’s Eve: Quiet Nights Count
Mary:
Did you have a quiet night last night, Jules? Or did you do anything wild and crazy?
Julie:
We’re not a wild and crazy group over here. (laughs) We ordered food and hung out — watched The Twilight Zone, hung out with the kids. It was really nice.
And then Vaughn scared the crap out of us — he just jumped in like, “Happy New Year!” and I was not prepared.
Mary:
That’s amazing.
It’s funny you mention fireworks, because this year we had a lot of fireworks around. I’m near Boston — not in Boston — about 5 to 7 miles out. So yes, fireworks in Boston, but also all over the neighborhood.
And it was… nice. Just happy noise. Nothing crazy. Nobody fighting. And Julie, you know I’ve told you stories about my neighborhood sometimes.
We’ve had that couple that starts fighting and then by the end of the fight they make up — or somebody is outside with roses and coffee leaning on the horn trying to get someone to come out. We have stories. But last night? Just happy.
I texted a friend yesterday like, “Hey, we’re moving into the new year.” And he goes, “That doesn’t mean it’ll be any better.” And I was like… okay, I need to put my phone down. Put you down for a minute. (laughs)
I’m not going into the new year like that.
Julie:
No.
Mary:
You have to go in like, “All right, this is going to be a year of good and things to learn.”
And calm nights at home are good. You don’t have to do something every New Year’s Eve.
Julie:
Yeah. The last time we went out and did something… probably right before kids.
Mary:
Right. And now they’re getting older, so we can do more stuff.
And I think about Emily — you guys know I talk about my niece a lot — she’s going to be 21 this time next year.
Julie:
Party!
Mary:
Yeah — well, if I’m the auntie and she calls because she needs a driver somewhere, I will be that auntie. I remember my club days on New Year’s Eve.
I’ll go get her. That’s fine.
Resolutions vs. Systems
Mary:
So, Jules — do you do resolutions?
Julie:
I don’t do resolutions. I used to, but then I get on my own nerves about it.
Last year I did the “12 wishes” thing and that was pretty good… although, you guys might remember, I started them very late. So I was burning like three a day trying to catch up. (laughs) That was interesting.
This year I thought about doing it again, but I don’t know. I saw this girl talking about something like sprint planning — not by month, but quarterly chunks — and I love that.
I put stickers on my planner but haven’t set it up yet, and it’s already the first, so we’ll see what happens.
But I’m leaning toward: what projects do I want to get done this year? What are things I haven’t done in a while that I want to bring back — especially dance related stuff.
And I’ve been getting pushed in multiple ways — positively — to start pouring candles again.
Mary:
Yay!
Julie:
Partially by you — and I appreciate it. I want to choreograph a few things a month, even if it’s just for me — get my brain working that way again.
Mary:
I love that.
I learned a couple years ago I don’t do well with the word “resolutions,” because I’m one of those people — by January 3rd, it’s like… well, those all went by the wayside. (laughs)
And listen, you can make change any day, any time. It doesn’t have to be January 1st. But I like the clean slate feeling of January — beginning of the year, like, what do I want to do differently?
You sent me that video — and if anyone knows who it was, put it in the comments, because we want to credit her.
But she had this idea: one big thing for the year — like the big trip, run the marathon, whatever — then six smaller goals, and six things to look forward to.
And then for habits: one habit each quarter. So by the end of the year you have four new habits.
And I like it because I’m a systems person. If I create a system, I do better.
For example, I’m in school right now — substance use disorder classes — and every Sunday I sit down and write out my homework and deadlines for the week. And if something big is coming — like a midterm — I write it on the side: “Start working on this.”
That sounds simple, but it helps me hit my goals so much better. So I feel like this quarterly-habits thing is similar — it’s a system.
Because I’m always complaining to Julie offline like, “I want to start this, I want to do that,” and then I add something and it doesn’t stick.
So for 2026, I’m trying something new. I need a system. Loosey-goosey doesn’t stick for me. I don’t get everything done that I want to get done.
Julie:
I like it.
Mary:
We’ll see.
Julie:
I like a list. I like bullet journaling. Having something to write things down makes it a lot better.
Element Readings for the Year
Mary:
So folks — if you’re watching the replay, hello, thank you for watching. If you’re here live, thank you for watching. Feel free to chat.
We’re going to pull messages for each element — by zodiac sign. So we’ll pull a card first for fire signs — Aries, Leo, Sagittarius.
And listen for your sun sign, but also listen for your rising sign if you know it — because sometimes it resonates differently.
Fire Signs: Aries • Leo • Sagittarius
Mary:
We’re both fire signs.
Julie:
Yep.
Mary:
Julie is an Aries.
Julie:
Yes.
Mary:
All right. For fire signs, I pulled:
Ace of Pentacles (reversed)
Knight of Wands (reversed)
Six of Cups (upright)
And I’m reading for myself too, so… if it’s not all sunshine and roses, I’m feeling it with you.
This feels like: fire signs need to strap down on money a little bit this year. Not in a “you’ll have a bad year” way — but in a “you have goals” way.
A big way to get freedom and hit our goals is to be intentional about what we consider abundant and important. Budgeting. Looking at what we’re spending. Maybe moving money around. Maybe making space in one area so we can invest in another.
And I’m not saying “just stop buying lattes.” That is not what I’m saying.
But it is saying: less dopamine spending, more intention.
Julie:
As opposed to the dopamine purchases I’ve been doing to get through 2025.
Mary:
What are you talking about?
Julie:
Random… crystal shop… candle shop… bookstores…
Mary:
All of the above. (laughs)
So yeah — time and money. Those are valuable. Be more intentional.
Now, the Knight of Wands reversed is also a reminder: we want to move fast, but if we’re not doing the things we need to do to get there, we’ll feel delayed.
Julie:
You’re reading us for filth.
Mary:
For filth already. Thanks, 2026.
But if we tighten up the money and the intention? The Six of Cups upright feels like we get to enjoy life more — nostalgia, sweetness, “I get to do things that feel good,” but with stability behind it.
Julie:
Do you want my self-care cards?
Mary:
Yes.
Julie:
I pulled:
Beauty ritual
Plan a vacation
Make a vision board
And it’s funny because none of that has to mean spending a ton of money. It’s about intention and making space for joy.
Mary:
Exactly. Fire signs — intentional joy. Let the dopamine come from something that actually builds your life.
Julie:
I know. It’s taking a second.
Mary:
Same. There are times I order something and it arrives and I’m like… did I order this?
Earth Signs: Taurus • Virgo • Capricorn
Mary:
Okay, earth signs — Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn. Happy birthday to our Capricorns out there.
For earth signs, I pulled:
The Tower (reversed)
Six of Pentacles (upright)
Seven of Swords (reversed)
Julie:
Coming in hot!
Mary:
It is coming in hot.
So earth signs: the Six of Pentacles is good — bonus energy, abundance, reward, support.
But with Tower reversed, it’s like: you’re avoiding collapse by choosing change intentionally. You’re not waiting for the universe to rip the roof off — you’re restructuring on purpose.
And the Seven of Swords reversed feels like: stop self-sabotaging, stop carrying what isn’t yours, stop trying to “manage everything quietly” like you can outsmart exhaustion.
Earth signs, the message is: good things are coming in. But you have to create space for them. And don’t overextend yourself to “earn” it.
You’ve already been working hard. This is a year where you receive — without guilt.
Julie:
Self-care for earth signs, I pulled:
Clear your energy field
Connect with your ancestors
Burning bowl ritual
So — letting go of what you don’t need anymore, calling in wisdom, releasing what you’re done with. Like: “Okay, we’re done. That goes over there.”
Mary:
How do you do that? What’s that like? (laughs)
Water Signs: Pisces • Cancer • Scorpio
Mary:
Now water signs — Pisces, Cancer, Scorpio.
I pulled:
Ten of Cups (upright)
The Fool (reversed)
Nine of Swords (reversed)
And thank God — for a second I almost said Ten of Swords. Big difference. (laughs)
Water signs: you have the Ten of Cups here. That’s emotional fulfillment. Stability. Love. Support. A good season.
But water signs are often waiting for the other shoe to drop. And this is the year to stop doing that.
Enjoy what you have. Be present. Let things be stable without scanning the horizon for disaster.
Water doesn’t always have to be moving. Sometimes water rests. Sometimes it’s still.
So if you feel restless — take a breath. Be where you are. Trust that if it’s time to move, you’ll know.
Julie:
That lines up with what I pulled:
Make an altar
Intuition
Family
Create a space where you can pause — whether it’s physical or just a few minutes in your day. Trust your intuition about when it’s time to move and when it’s just restlessness.
And lean into your family — chosen family, family of origin — the people who feel safe, warm, and comforting.
Mary:
I love that. And yes, Scorpios — don’t just dump on people. (laughs) But find your people. Let yourself recharge.
Air Signs: Gemini • Libra • Aquarius
Mary:
All right — air signs: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius. Yes, Aquarius is the water-bearer, but it’s still an air sign — they bring the knowledge.
For air signs, I pulled:
The High Priestess (upright)
Queen of Wands (upright)
The Well (a card about drawing from the self)
Air signs, this is a big year for trusting yourself.
Listen to your inner guidance, your instincts, your intuition, your thought process. Consult outside opinions only when you truly need it — and choose wisely.
If you’re going to ask for advice, go to someone who’s either:
an expert in that area, or
someone who’s unbiased — no agenda.
Because there may be people around you giving opinions that don’t align with what you actually need.
Trust yourself. It might not make sense in the moment — but it will later.
Julie:
Self-care for air signs, I pulled:
Connect with crystals
Be still
Clean your space
And if crystals aren’t your thing, that’s okay — the message still feels like slowing down, clearing the mental clutter, calming the mind.
Be still. Whatever you need to know will come through more clearly when you’re not spinning.
And cleaning your space feels practical, but it matters — a clean space often equals a clearer mind.
Mary:
Yes — housework, homework. (laughs)
